Elon Musk launches Tesla’s version of a pickup truck

A company that aims to push boundaries and excite motorists, Tesla has announced its plans to release what is being called the ‘Cybertruck’.

Earlier in the year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter (which he now coincidentally owns) to announce his plans for a whole new kind of electric pickup truck. As you can imagine, the news created quite a buzz within the automotive industry and we now know the arrival of the Tesla Cybertruck is coming sooner than first thought.

In this article all about Tesla’s Cybertruck, here at Octane Finance, we explain what you can expect from the electric vehicle (EV), when it will be released in the UK, and how much it will cost. Read on to find out more…

What is the Tesla Cybertruck?

Described by Tesla as ‘better utility than a truck with more performance than a sports car’, the Cybertruck really is set to make a statement. As you can see from the accompanying images, Tesla’s Cybertruck looks like it has roared straight off of Mars and onto planet Earth. Which lends the question; what type of vehicle is the Tesla Cybertruck?

Although it bears no resemblance to any other type of truck available to buy right now, the Cybertruck is Tesla’s very own take on a pickup truck. As you can see, it blurs the lines between the functionality of a classic pickup model while blending the practicality of a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).

What are the benefits of a Tesla Cybertruck?

Tesla has gone all out to create an electric vehicle that is as safe as can be. The Cybertruck’s exterior shell is described by Tesla as an ‘exoskeleton’ that has been created and designed for ultimate durability and passenger protection.

Tesla claims this exoskeleton design is very nearly impenetrable and has been created from ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel to form the body, in what’s called a ‘structural skin’. The strength of the exterior shell is then complemented by Tesla armour glass (sounds like it would be perfect for a James Bond movie!).

According to Tesla, the stainless steel shell is not only designed to protect passengers, but also protects the exterior from other drivers too. Apparently it helps eliminate damage such as dents and corrosion caused by the elements.

What features does the Tesla Cybertruck have?

As we’ve already explained, Tesla’s Cybertruck is an electric pickup of the future. But don’t be put off by its out-of-space design and armoured approach - the Cybertruck is practical as it is game-changing…

Experience up to 3,500 pounds (1,587 kgs) of payload capacity, supported by adjustable air suspension depending on how heavy your cargo is. Expect 100 cubic feet (2.83 cubic metres) of lockable storage for an impressive loading space at the rear of the vehicle. The vault-like storage even includes a cover that is robust enough to stand on! Tesla Cybertruck’s payload capabilities are matched by its towing abilities of over 14,000 pounds (6,350 kgs).

But it’s not just the cargo carrying perks that is bound to appeal to many motorists, as the Tesla Cybertruck can comfortably seat six people inside too. For extra space, owners can utilise the additional storage area under the second row of seats.

So what about its electrified performance? Don’t be deceived by its size, as the Tesla Cybertruck has a range of up to 500-miles on a single charge (depending on weather, terrain and driving style) and can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 2.9 seconds!

When is the Tesla Cybertruck coming to the UK?

The much-anticipated arrival of the Tesla Cybertruck is expected at some point next year, but for the moment, Elon Musk is keeping his cards close to his chest in terms of a definite release date. What we do know is that Tesla will start production of the Cybertruck mid-2023.

Before you get too excited though, there’s already a waiting list as long as your arm. Those hoping to get their hands on the steering wheel of a Tesla Cybertruck may have to wait - up to three years! Tesla superfans were quick off the mark back in 2019 to get their name on the list first, so for now, the first batch of vehicles off the production line have already been snapped up.

How much will the Tesla Cybertruck cost?

As you can imagine, the Tesla Cybertruck isn’t particularly cheap to buy. Basic models will start from around £33,000, up to around £58,000 for more premium variants.

How does the Cybertruck compare to other models in the Tesla range?

The Tesla brand is renowned for creating vehicles using sustainable energy through its 100% fully electric range of cars, such as the Model Y, Model 3, Model S, and Model X. However this isn’t the first time the brand has deviated from its mainstream lineup…

The company has also created the Tesla Roadster which is the quickest car in the world, having set a record pace of over 250 mph! As such, Tesla’s Cybertruck model is set to push the boundaries once again, this time targeting the commercial vehicle market with its hybrid pickup truck and SUV beast.
