How to Finance a Supercar: The Complete 2026 Guide

Buying a supercar is the dream of many motorists and supercar enthusiasts, but it’s a significant purchase that requires careful thought and consideration. Understanding how supercar finance works and the different options available will help you structure your purchase and organise your finances to avoid a sticky situation you didn’t predict or plan for.

Not many people have the funds to buy a supercar outright, which is why many turn to specialist supercar finance for affordability and flexibility.

At Octane Finance, we’re brokers who specialise in supercar and luxury car finance. We know this is a serious purchase, so we’ve outlined everything you need to know about financing your first supercar in this handy guide.

The Traditional Ways To Finance a Supercar

There are three main ways to finance a supercar; which one you choose depends on your circumstances, what you want at the end of the agreement, and what you’re willing to pay. Some of these ways you’ll probably already be familiar with, as they are the same finance options available to most car purchases.

Hire Purchase (HP)

Hire Purchase is the most traditional and straightforward way to eventually own a supercar. You start off with a deposit, choose the length of your agreement, usually 3 to 5 years, pay your monthly instalments, and by the end of the agreement you pay a small ownership transfer fee, and that’s it; you’re the rightful owner of a supercar.  HP simply spreads the cost of your chosen supercar across a number of months plus interest.

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)

PCP is the most popular finance option for purchasing a car. Start with a deposit, then pay the depreciation of your supercar plus interest across monthly repayments - usually much lower than what you’ll pay with HP- and then choose what you want to do. At the end of your agreement, you can either keep the car and pay off the so-called balloon payment, which is the predicted future value, as you were only paying for the depreciation, hand back the car or use the equity you’ve built to buy a new supercar.

Lease Purchase (LP)

If you don’t think HP is for you and you don’t want to deal with the end-of-agreement options that come with PCP, Lease Purchase might be for you. Pay your deposit, keep the monthly repayments low by paying only the depreciation, and save up to make the final balloon payment to own the car. No option to hand back the car or use the equity for a new one- just a more affordable route to ownership.

Asset-Based Financing

HP, PCP, and LP aren't the only ways to finance a supercar; they're simply the traditional ones. There are alternative ways to finance your dream supercar. We call this “Asset-Based Financing,” which uses your existing assets.

Asset Refinancing

If you have an existing finance agreement, you may be able to refinance it with a new lender for better terms, or use the value built up in your current vehicle towards your next purchase, depending on the lender's criteria and your remaining balance.

Equity Release

If a vehicle has sufficient value, you can release equity from that asset while maintaining ownership. Typically, lenders will advance 50% to 80% of the specialist-assessed market value; a specialist broker can help, especially if you are a collector or investor.

Business Financing

If you have a business, you can finance your new supercar through it; however, this comes with strict tax rules and implications. When done correctly after consulting an accountant, this can be an effective way to finance a supercar.

What Are The Benefits of Supercar Finance

Paying cash for an asset like a supercar isn't always the best option, and many investors and collectors will tell you that. A strategic approach is often more financially advantageous.

Tax Advantages

If you're a business owner, financing a supercar through your company may offer some tax benefits, such as claiming interest as a business expense. However, the rules on VAT, capital allowances and company car tax are strict, and for many supercars the tax savings are limited. Always speak to an accountant before choosing this route.

Preserved Capital

When you don’t tie all your capital in one asset, you keep liquidity that can then be invested elsewhere. This keeps your cash free for any emergency or situation that may arise.

Flexibility

Supercar finance allows you the flexibility to choose what you want to do with your supercar. You can change your financing as your life changes.

Supercar Finance Frequently Asked Questions:

What credit score do I need to finance a supercar?

Although we often say there isn't a single number to aim for, because requirements vary by provider, a good credit score will give you better options. Beyond your credit score, consider your overall financial situation: if you have a stable income and you’re on top of your outgoing payments, your credit score is only part of the picture.

Can I release equity from my car that I own outright?

If you own a car outright, releasing equity from it is usually a simple way to free up cash. As always, the vehicle should have a decent market value for you to release equity.

What insurance will I need for a financed supercar?

Full and comprehensive insurance is required, but you should consider all your options and make sure the lender knows what you’re going for, including GAP insurance.  We can help you figure this out.

What deposit should I put down?

Most lenders require a deposit of 10% to 20% of the vehicle value, but this varies depending on your profile. A higher deposit means lower monthly payments.
